Sheltered Housing with Community Facilities at Turners Cross, Cork.

Part VIII approval has been granted for a sheltered housing complex with community facilities at the junction of South Douglas Road and Curragh Road, Turner’s Cross, Cork.

A number of derelict buildings on this site have recently been demolished to enable building works to proceed. A road widening proposal for South Douglas Road will reduce the area of the site and the current design incorporates the new road configuration.

The proposed development will consist of the following: Construction of 18 no. apartments incorporating 17 no. apartments on three floors and a community facility at ground level with 1 no. apartment overhead. The architectural treatment of this proposal is very important. It is in close proximity to the most significant modern landmark building in the city, namely Christ the King Church. The church is a seminal building and is considered one of the finest modern buildings in the country. The massing, height and architectural expression of the housing proposal have been carefully considered. The scheme is in character with the adjoining buildings and respects the existing and new line of the street.
