OFFICE OF THE CORK CITY CORONER,
29, WASHINGTON STREET
The Coroner is an independent official with responsibility under the law for the medico legal investigation of certain deaths. The Cork City Coroner investigates those deaths occuring in Cork City.
The Coroner's office must inquire into the circumstances of sudden, unexplained, violent and unnatural deaths. This may require a post mortem examination sometimes, followed by an inquest. The Coroner's inquiry is concerned with establishing whether or not death was due to natural or unnatural causes. If a death is due to unnatural causes, for example in a road traffic collision or by drowning, then an inquest must be held by law. The governing legislation is the Coroner's Act 1962. In 2010 the Cork City Coroner enquired into 944 reported deaths in the City of Cork and completed 221 inquests.
The Coroner's Court sits at the Circuit Court in Courtroom 7 on the second floor, Washington Street , Cork .
