In 2005, the Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government issued the interim National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) survey to Cork City Council. While the Survey only covers part of the City Council area, it is nonetheless a major contribution to an appreciation of the architectural heritage of Cork City and an important tool for its protection. The NIAH identifies just over 2000 structures, in and around the City Centre, which have been recommended for designation as Protected Structures by the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. Approximately 500 of these buildings are already included in the Record of Protected Structures (the RPS) for the city. Information about each of these buildings can be viewed on the NIAH website www.buildingsofireland.ie.
It is intended that the Ministerial recommendation will be incorporated into the RPS on an increment basis over the next 2 years in accordance with the Planning & Development Act 2000 Section 53 – 55. Each round commences with an advertisement in the Irish Examiner and the notification of owners and occupiers, who have a 6 week period to make submissions either in support of, or objecting to, the proposed addition. Within 12 weeks thereafter the submissions have to go to Council for a decision, after which the owners and occupiers are informed of this decision. The structures enjoy protection during this period until the final decision is made.
This round consisted of structures within the Cornmarket Street Action Plan Area. It also included structures within the Bishopstown and Wilton Area Action Plan area, which although outside the NIAH covered area, were identified during the preparation of the Action Plan. It also included historic post boxes all over the city. This round commenced on the 16th January 2007 and a final decision was made by Council on the 28th May 2007.
