The role of the Planning and Development Directorate is to develop an overall physical development policy for Cork City supporting economic growth, an acceptable standard of living and a satisfactory physical environment for living and working. 

Achievement of Aim:

The Directorate contributes to the attainment of this overall objective through:

• Developing policies for the orderly development of the City.
• Assisting the co-ordination of the activities of the City Council, the operations of other public agencies and the activities of the private sector, to be mutually consistent and supportive.
• Ensuring that individual development projects are of reasonable quality and take due account of surrounding properties and areas.

The Directorate is required to carry out statutory functions under the Planning and Development act 2000. Those activities can be divided into a policy/plan making function and the control of development by the private and public sectors.

The Planning and Development Directorate is divided into the following sections:

• Development Management
• Planning Policy
• Enforcement
