On Sunday 4th November as part of its 2018 Bliain na Gaeilge celebration Cork City Council, with the assistance of Creative Ireland, organised a celebration of Irish music and poetry in the Concert Hall, City Hall, Cork under the banner of Siamsa na Gaeilge.

In the weeks leading up to the event singer/songwriter John Spillane conducted  6 X  1 hour workshops in the city’s gaelscoileanna preparing a group from each school to sing at the concert.

The Schools involved on the evening were: Gaelscoil Uí Riada, Gaelscoil na Dúglaise, Gaelscoil Pheig Sayers, Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn, and Gaelscoil Mhachan.

MC for the evening was John Spillane who lead the schools in song interspersed with contributions from luminaries of the Irish music and poetry scene as Seán Ó Sé , Peadar ó Riada , John Spillane (with house band Nigel Grufferty (fiddle) Brian Ó Muiríosa (bodhrán, banjo, feadóga)), and Colm Breathnach (poet).

Speaking after the event Chris Dorgan, Oifigeach Forbartha Gaeilge, Cork City Council stated:

“We were delighted with the outcome of the project. The mixture of modern and older traditions even in the song selection from the schools was tremendous. To have over 600 people hear this and Séan Ó Sé at the height of his powers was a privilege for all who were present . Having John share his enthusiasm, firstly in the workshops and in the hall on the evening was marvelous. This would not have been possible without the assistance of Creative Ireland”.
