Glanmire residents go above and beyond to support their local community

Local community and voluntary groups in Glanmire have being going beyond the call of duty for their community. Working alongside the Cork City Community Response Forum (CRF), local heroes are making sure everyone is being well-looked after from delivering groceries and medication to cutting grass and picking up litter.

 

Some recent highlights include:

 

  • Glanmire Ladies Football Club have played their part working in their local community, with members, friends and supporters of the club keeping contact with those cocooning, dropping information leaflets and making sure that nobody feels isolated
  • Glanmire Football Club, Whites Cross GAA and SARS have supported SuperValu to help with the increased demand for home deliveries to local residents
  • Both Glanmire Credit Union and Mickio's Motor Factors sponsored masks and PPE for local nursing home Glyntown Care Centre
  • Glanmire Youth Project have been running Zoom cookery classes which have gone down a great hit! Ingredients were bought by club leaders and dropped to young people's houses prior to class. Zoom music lessons are also up and running.
  • The Rocky Road Fairy Trail has been a magical addition to Glanmire’s wooded walkway. This was the idea of 5-year old Ava McDonnell. Her idea of introducing little fairy doors is being enjoyed by children and families in Glanmire
  • Local groups have been working non-stop to support one another and keep the local community informed, thanks to: Mums of Glanmire, Glanmire Noticeboard, Upper Glanmire Association, Glanmire Area Community Association, Glanmire Area Environmental Crew, and SAFE in Glanmire (Suicide Awareness For Everyone) for their tireless efforts
  • Businesses in the heart of our community continue to support the most vulnerable in our community and link up directly with our CRFto check on the elderly. Local businesses like Sugar Hut Confectionary, Balance, Dragon Palace and Adam’s Eggs have also been donating supplies to those who need it most.

 

Cork City Council Community Response Forum Lead, David O’Brien said: “As we are getting used to our new way of living and dealing with the changes that Phase 2 of the government’s restrictions have brought us, we should still be mindful that there are vulnerable people across our communities who will need our help and support with every day activities.   • The phone line is just one aspect of the Forum’s work.  Its core aim, as part of the Community Call, is contributing to the community-wide effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 by ensuring a coordinated community response.  The Council’s COVID-19 CRF will work to ensure that local resources – including social care support and social contact – are targeted at the people who need them most.
  • Cork City has been broken into 16 local area teams with a Cork City Council community worker and a HSE community worker in each area who will work with local champions – namely the existing voluntary organisations and groups who know their locality and can help us to match need with service delivery.  Each of the 16 local areas also has a link to Community Garda Services.
