Have your say on Emmett Place revamp
15 November 2024
The public is being asked to have its say in a statutory public consultation on the proposed enhancement of Emmett Place. The plans will complement the €29 million redevelopment of the Crawford Art Gallery, which includes the relocation of the gallery’s main entrance onto Emmett Place.
The proposed enhancement of the public realm at this location will include the extension of the pedestrianisation of the plaza, improved accessibility and attractive planting, creating a flexible, people-centred public space, suitable for temporary cultural events in the heart of the city.
The proposed scheme includes:
- Extending the pedestrianisation of Emmett Place from Opera Lane end to Lavitt’s Quay;
- Footpath realignment and upgrades on Lavitt’s Quay, including the removal of the existing setdown area at the northern end of Emmett Place;
- Upgrade of footpaths on Lavitt’s Quay from St. Patricks Street to Half Moon Street;
- Realignment of the roadway from Half Moon Street/Academy Street towards Drawbridge Street to improve functionality;
- Construction of raised planters with seating to the northern and southern ends of Emmett Place and raised planters with seating at the eastern railing of the Crawford Gallery;
- Decluttering of the existing area with the removal of redundant street furniture such as bollards and road signage etc. and the relocation of bicycle stands to the edges of the space;
- The relocation of the existing loading bay on Emmett Place to its southern end;
- Renovation and upgrade of the existing public lighting.
The project is to be built following completion of the redevelopment of the Crawford Gallery. The anticipated start date is 2027.
The consultation, including all relevant drawings and documentation is live on Cork City Council’s public consultation portal https://consult.corkcity.ie now and the closing date for all submissions is on Tuesday 10 January 2025 at 4pm.
