Wind and Rain Warnings in place for Cork, Sunday Sep 29

Updated 08:52 , Sep 29

Cork City Council wish to advise the public that Met Eireann have issued an Orange Rain Warning and Yellow Wind Warning for Cork City.  The Orange warning came into effect at 8:00am this morning (29th of September) and will be in place until 6:00pm this evening.  The Yellow Wind Warning is in place since 5:00am this morning and ends at 8:00pm this evening.

Across the city, the strong winds and heavy rainfall may lead to some spot flooding, surface water, debris on roads and footpaths and hazardous driving conditions.  As such road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, are asked to proceed with care and not to drive through a flooded road.

During this time Cork City will experience heavy rainfall and strong winds.  At this point in time no property damage or road closures are predicted.   It is anticipated that the flooding will be restricted to localised spot flooding on roads caused by local rivers bursting their banks or culverts/drains getting blocked. Having reviewed the tidal surge forecast models, no City centre tidal flooding is expected.

With the heavy rain and high winds and thus Cork City Council asks that members of the public please take the following measures:

  • Please secure loose items such as wheelie bins, garden furniture, trampolines etc.;
  • Don't make any unnecessary journeys during the period of the orange warning and if you must travel, be vigilant for the risk of fallen trees and debris/flooding on roads;
  • All construction sites should be made secure in advance of high winds, including plant, materials, and fencing;
  • Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged to enable communication.

Cork City Council is prepared to address any damage that might result from the heavy rain and winds. Our emergency and incident response crews are on standby and ready to respond if required.
