Cork City Council is celebrating the most successful Cork Heritage Open Day yet, with more than 21,000 people enjoying events and activities in recognition of Cork’s unique built heritage.
On September 18th, a record number of people accepted the invitation to explore Cork’s landmark buildings and discover more about our City’s stories and traditions. Many of these are not usually accessible to the general public,such as the masonic Hall and Montenotte House.
“Elizabeth Fort’s Medieval Day was a real crowd pleaser with more than 1,000 people through the gates by midday on Cork Heritage Open Day!” said Niamh Twomey, Heritage Officer with Cork City Council. “While the tours of the Courthouse on Anglesea Street, were booked out within minutes of the tickets being made available online!”
More than 40 buildings opened their doors free-of-charge for Cork Heritage Open Day, while five themed self-guided walking routes provided visitors with a jam-packed itinerary of events tailored to the young, and the young at heart.
Organised by Cork City Council, Cork Heritage Open Day kicks off National Heritage Week in partnership with the Heritage Council, and is proudly supported by media sponsors, Evening Echo and Cork’s 96FM.
“There are so many people behind the scenes that without their support, Cork Heritage Open Day wouldn’t be possible” added Niamh Twomey. So I’d like to give a special thanks to our army of volunteers whose passion and enthusiasm made this year’s Cork Heritage Open Day the best yet.”
