Community Wardens have been employed in RAPID areas in Cork City since August 2008. Their role is to work with local communities to improve the physical environment through education, enforcement and local action. They monitor and report Local Authority issues and liaise with the community and work hand in hand with the RAPID coordinators in their areas and with staff in other directorates of the Council and with various stakeholders.
The Community Wardens have a community focused approach linking with the needs of the residents within the area, fostering community spirit, encouraging communities to improve their local environment and helping to raise the confidence of the community.
The Community Wardens role sees them regularly support and attend residents groups, organise regular community/estate clean ups, support local environmental events/groups, support and attend neighbourhood watch or community safety fora and a whole lot more.
Community Wardens do daily walkabouts making a visible presence across the area and follow up issues reported such as abandoned cars, litter, dumping, repairs & maintenance. They also help to monitor of local authority housing estates – reporting such occurrences as litter/dumping/anti social behaviours.
