Knapp's Square & Lower John Street Area Pedestrian & Cycle Measures

Works Extent

The project consisted of the construction of a variety measures which are designed to better facilitate cycling and walking along Knapp's Square and Lower John Street (from Camden Quay at the southern end to Upper John Street and Cathedral Walk at the northern end).  In addition, an upgrade to the public realm in the vicinity of Saint John Villas and Curry's Rock was included.

Cycle ramps were also constructed to the existing steps on Mary's Lane and Bob & Joan's Walk to provide cycle connectivity between Lower John Street and the Shandon area.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are to provide:

  • Enhanced connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists;
  • A safe and direct off-road route for commuters, school goers and leisure enthusiasts;
  • An environment which will encourage modal shift to sustainable forms of transport;
  • An improved quality of life for residents in the area;
  • Part of the overall cycle network;
  • Reduction in traffic volumes on the road network.

Timeline

The works were funded by the NTA and McGinty & O'Shea Ltd. were appointed as contractors for the project.  Substantial completion was achieved in November 2023.
