Myrtle Hill Bridge Rehabilitation Project 2022

Myrtle Hill Bridge is a single span masonry arch bridge.  It is located approximately 9km south of Cork City centre on the L6461 road just north of Ballygarvan.  Myrtle Hill Bridge spans over the Owenboy River tributary.

Works Extent

• Removal of all vegetation, trees and algae from the entire structure including any loose debris;
• Repair damaged sections on masonry spandrels, external walls, wing walls, abutments and arch ring and arch barrel;
• Construct new parapet wall to eastern and western elevations and approaches.  Design of parapet must include for or incorporate vehicle retention;
• Resurface bridge carriageway and approaches, include rubbing strip along base of parapets on eastern and western edge of carriageway;
• Install appropriate road markings and signage on approaches and at junction.

Objectives

The bridge structure has suffered significant deterioration to wing walls and abutments with spalling of masonry joints on arch barrels.

The objectives of the works are:

• Restore the overall structural integrity of the bridge and install new masonry parapets to improve safety for road users;
• Improve road user safety through improved visibility and approach signage and resurfacing of bridge carriageway and approaches with upgraded road markings.

Timeline

Start: Design ongoing in March 2022.

Finish: Tender & Evaluation of Contractor expected to be completed by May 2022 with Construction to start in summer 2022.
