Rathcooney Bridge Rehabilitation Project 2024

Works Extent

Rathcooney Bridge is a single span clapper stone Bridge. It is located approximately 7km northeast of Cork City centre on the L2977 Rathcooney Road junction with the L2979 Spring Hill Road.  

Scope of Works

  • Rebuild parapets and approach walls.
  • Rebuild abutments and wing walls.
  • Replace damaged clapper stone.
  • Install vehicle restraint at northern parapet and approach walls.
  • Resurface bridge carriageway and approaches, include rubbing strip along base of parapets on eastern and western edge of carriageway.
  • Install appropriate road markings and signage on approaches and at the junction.

Objectives

The objectives of the works are:

  • Restore the overall structure integrity of the bridge and retain its heritage and aesthetics.
  • Improve road user safety by rebuilding parapets, installing vehicle restraint, resurfacing the carriageway and including new road markings.

Timeline

Construction started in August 2024 and was completed in September 2024.
