South Douglas Road Junction Upgrade Scheme
Works Extent
The South Douglas Road Junction Upgrade Scheme involved significant road network improvements at the junction of the South Douglas Road and the N40 Junction 7 Douglas West Off Ramp, replacing the previous roundabout with a traffic signalised junction and enhancing pedestrian and cycling facilities in the area.
Objectives
- Provision of more active travel solutions as an alternative to vehicle dependency, such as walking, cycling and public transportation;
- Safer pedestrian access from Douglas Village to Willow Park, Douglas Community School, Gaelscoil na Dúglaise and the Tramore Valley Park through the provision of controlled crossings on all approaches to the South Douglas Road;
- Provision of a northbound segregated cycle track under the N40 connecting to the existing northbound cycle lane on the South Douglas Road;
- Provision of a raised 2-way segregated cycle track to Gaelscoil na Dúglaise with the inclusion of bike parking at the end of the cycle track;
- The new signalised junction provides better traffic control, as the new traffic lights are connected and synchronized with the existing Douglas Village traffic signalised system. Additionally, the traffic light junction upgrade prioritises N40 Junction 7 Douglas West Off Ramp traffic, preventing backups and reducing the risk of high-speed rear-end collisions on the N40 main line.
