Increased pedestrianisation of city centre streets begins

From Tuesday May 4, shoppers and visitors to be the city will enjoy increased hours of pedestrianisation on Oliver Plunkett Street and connected streets.

This pedestrianisation is aimed at making the city a safer, more inclusive and pleasant place for residents, shoppers & visitors and at supporting local business. To enhance the street surfaces, Cork City Council undertook resurfacing works on these streets last month.

Temporary bollards and pedestrian signage will be in place on:

• Oliver Plunkett -11am to 4am, 7 days a week
• Cook St, South - as above

• Caroline St – as above
• Pembroke St - 9.30-4am 7 days a week
• Princes St -as above
• Phoenix St -as above
• Beasley St - as above
• Robert St -11am-4am 7 days a week

In the coming days, automatic bollards on these streets will be adjusted in line with the increased pedestrianisation hours.

 Further extended hours will be implemented in the coming weeks on:

• Tuckey St
• Little Anne St
• Little Cross St
• St Peter and Paul’s Place and part of St Pauls St

City centre streets were temporarily pedestrianised last summer as part of the “Reimagining Cork City” programme, in order to facilitate social distancing and outdoor dining.  Following an overwhelmingly positive reaction to this initiative and following a series of public consultations, it was agreed to permanently pedestrianise 17 of these streets.
