Morrison’s Island Works Update

On Monday 14 July, Cork City Council will begin alteration works at the junction of South Mall and Parnell Place/Parnell Bridge which will improve pedestrian safety and traffic calming at this location and enable the construction of the new public space at Parnell Plaza.

To facilitate these works, some day time lane restrictions and nighttime lane closures will be required as follows:

Monday 14 July to Friday 25 July – the right-turning, southbound lane from South Mall onto Parnell Bridge will be closed from 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m., Monday to Friday nights only.

Southbound diversion route:

Traffic travelling southbound from South Mall will be diverted via Parnell Place, Lower Oliver Plunkett Street, Clontarf Street, Terence MacSweeney Quay onto Anglesea Street.

Monday 28 July to Friday 8 August – the left-turning, northbound lane from South Mall onto Parnell Place will be closed from 8.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m., Monday to Friday nights only.

Northbound diversion route:

Traffic travelling northbound from South Mall will be diverted via Anglesea Street, Old Station Road, Eglinton Street, Terence McSweeney Quay onto Parnell Place.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and follow diversional signage. Provision for pedestrians and cyclists will be in place.

When works are completed, the two existing left hand lanes turning northbound from South Mall to Parnell Place will be converted to one lane northbound and the existing  traffic island and southbound lane will be moved slightly north of their current position.

Trinity Bridge/Union Quay

Works are underway on the Trinity Bridge section of the project.
To facilitate these works, a temporary lane closure will be in place on Union Quay from the junction with George’s Quay until 31 August 2025. Traffic diversions will be in place as follows:
  • Access to Union Quay will be via right turn (northbound) from Copley Street;
  • No right turn from Parnell Bridge onto Union Quay for through traffic (local access only);
  • No right turn from South Terrace onto Union Quay;
  • Traffic exiting Union Quay can do so by turning right onto Anglesea Street only, there will be no exit onto George’s Quay/Copley Street;
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained, please follow signage on site;
  • Trinity Bridge will remain open for pedestrians for the duration of this portion of the works.

Local and emergency access will be maintained. Please follow traffic diversion signage in place.

Union Quay Temporary Lane Closure March 2025

Father Mathew Quay

Works will start on Father Mathew Quay on 11 November 2024.  A road closure will be in place between Parliament Bridge and Holy Trinity Church to facilitate these works.  The road will be closed to vehicular traffic, with diversions in place via South Mall and Father Mathew Street.  Parking will be suspended within the closed section of road.  There will also be no parking on Father Mathew Street to allow for delivery vehicles and truck movements.

The disabled parking space on Father Mathew Street will be relocated to Father Mathew Quay.

Pedestrian access to Holy Trinity Church and Parish Office on Father Mathew Quay will be maintained.


Morrison's Island Phase 2 Diversion Route

Morrison's Quay

Morrison's Quay will be closed fully from its junction with Morrison's street to its junction with South Mall, and closed southbound only from South Mall to Catherine Street, from Monday 15 July 2024 until Friday 11 July 2025, to enable works on the first phase of the scheme at the new plaza.

One-way traffic flow from Parliament Bridge to Morrison’s Street will remain in operation for the first phase of the works.

It will be necessary to remove on-street parking on Morrison’s Quay and Fr. Mathew Quay as the works progress, however for the first phase, the existing parking on Fr. Mathew Quay will largely remain in place .

Local access and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

 

South Mall

On Monday 15 July, construction will begin on the new plaza at the junction of South Mall and Parnell Bridge.  To facilitate this work, the traffic lanes on South Mall will be reduced to one lane turning left northbound onto Parnell Place, and one lane turning right southbound onto Parnell Bridge.  

Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained.

Some night works may be required next week to carry out the enabling works.
