A Breath of Fresh Air for Cork City this Saturday

06/09/2024

Cork City will come alive with activities and initiatives in celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies this Saturday.

This is the second consecutive year that Cork will participate in this global event, also known as Clean Air Day, following a successful inaugural celebration last year.

The theme for Clean Air Day 2024 is 'Clean Air Now'  underscoring the critical importance of good air quality for our health and  well-being.

Air pollution poses significant health risks for children, the elderly, and individuals through conditions such as asthma. By taking simple, everyday actions, we can contribute to enhancing air quality in our neighbourhoods and to improving our health.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle said: “To help improve air quality, we can take practical steps such as walking, biking, using public transport more or we can enhance our surroundings by greening our spaces with plants and trees or opt for less polluting fuels for home heating. By making these conscious decisions, we create a healthier environment for ourselves and future generations”.

A diverse array of events is planned with part of the Grand Parade designated a play street zone from 10.30am-1pm. Artist Robyn Deasy will be on hand to offer a session of creative engagement. People of all ages can learn about the science of air quality at the pop-up air quality stand at  the City Library on Grand Parade that morning. Researchers from University College Cork’s RADICAL project will offer interactive demonstrations suitable for all ages and participants can engage in activities ranging from handling air quality sensors to exploring science through a microscope. There will also be a Spinning Competition with a chance to win prizes from TFI Bikes.

At Tramore Valley Park, there will be a “Sports on the Green” initiative. Children from ages 4 to 12+ years can try out athletics, Gaelic games, soccer and cricket between 11am and 3.30pm. Expert coaches from the FAI Cork, Athletics Ireland, Cork GAA and Munster Cricket will be on hand to provide expert tips and skills.
