Orange wind warning issued for Cork
15:20 - 05/04/2024
Cork City Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team has met in advance of the Status Orange wind and rainfall warning issued for Cork in effect from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday 6 April 2024. Gale force winds and persistent rainfall, are expected over that period.
Across the city, the strong winds, rainfall and saturated ground conditions will likely lead to some spot flooding, surface water, debris on roads and footpaths and hazardous driving conditions, so road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, are asked to proceed with care and not to drive through a flooded road.
Having reviewed the tidal surge forecast models no significant City centre flooding is expected. There may be some ponding on low lying quays during the morning high tide at 4:00am on Saturday.
Winds are expected to be severe and as a result Cork City Council asks that members of the public please take the following measures:
- Please secure loose items such as wheelie bins, garden furniture, trampolines etc.;
- Don't make any unnecessary journeys during the period of the orange warning and if you must travel, be vigilant for the risk of fallen trees and debris on roads;
- All construction sites should be made secure in advance of high winds, including plant, materials, and fencing;
- Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged to enable communication.
Cork City Council is prepared to address any damage that might result from the severe winds. Our emergency and incident response crews are on standby.
