22/05/2024
Ireland’s stories in images for 2023 continues its nationwide tour as the AIB Press Photographer of the Year Award exhibition arrives in Cork where it will be on display in Cork City Hall until June 2 2024.
The exhibition was officially opened by Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy on Tuesday, May 21 and this year’s AIB Press Photographer of the Year, Alan Betson of The Irish Times, was also in attendance.
The exhibition features 114 images in total capturing life, both at home and abroad during 2023 and showcasing the very best of Irish press photography.
The AIB Press Photographer of the Year Award 2024 was presented at a special ceremony in Dublin in February by An Tánaiste Micheál Martin TD in addition to winners of 10 individual categories – News, Daily Life & People, Sports Action, Sports Feature, Portrait, Nature & the Environment, Politics, Arts & Entertainment, Reportage and Multimedia in addition to the AIB Sustainability Award.
Alan Betson of the Irish Times was awarded the trophy with his portfolio praised by the judges for its huge versatility. This was the fourth occasion that the Meath resident has won the sought after title, now in its 46th year.
Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran Mc Carthy said: “I am delighted to launch this exhibition. There is such a strong tradition of photography in our city and especially of press photography. I have such respect and admiration for press photography: for its capacity to tell a story, to capture emotions, moments in time and the best and worst of humanity. Press photography helps shape our understanding of the present, engaging audiences that might not otherwise read a newspaper or click on an online news article”.
Commenting at the opening reception event at Cork City Hall, David Branigan, President of Press Photographers Ireland CLG, said, “We are delighted that the exhibition has arrived in Cork and is on display in such a prestigious venue. I would like to congratulate my colleagues from Cork on their success at this year’s awards with many of their images featuring in the exhibition.
We hope that visitors from the local area and beyond will enjoy browsing through the award-winning and highly acclaimed imagery which demonstrates the hard work and commitment of our Irish press photographers.”
