This week, Cork City recognises some of its civic, cultural and community leaders with the annual Lord Mayor’s Cultural & Civic Awards and a Community & Voluntary Recognition Ceremony.  With COVID-19 restrictions, the traditional awards ceremony in City Hall could not take place, so this year the awards have gone virtual.

  • On Tuesday June 9 the handover of the cultural award will be broadcast at 3.30pm on Cork City Council’s YouTube channel.
  • On Wednesday, June 10, the civic award ceremonies will be broadcast separately at 3.30pm on the same channel.
  • On Thursday 11th June, a special tribute to the city’s community and voluntary groups – who have been the cornerstone of the city’s Community Call - will air on the channel at 3.30pm.
  • Finally, this year the Lord Mayor, Cllr John Sheehan will also be recognising two youth advocates in a fourth 3.30pm recording this Friday.

AWARD WINNERS:

  • Cónal Creedon, acclaimed playwright, novelist and documentary filmmaker, is the recipient of the Lord Mayor’s Cultural Award, in recognition of his huge contribution to the arts not just in Cork City but internationally.

  • Each year six people receive Lord Mayor’s Civic Awards in recognition of their efforts to improve the lot of the community. Breaking with the usual award ceremony format due to the current pandemic, each individual award winner was presented with their award separately and the presentations filmed.  This year, the recipients are:
  1. Con Murphy, G.P. and former Cork GAA medic;
  2. Katherine Hartford, Project Manager of Young Knocknaheeny;
  3. Ronnie Dorney, former HSE Community Worker;
  4. Nuala O’Connor, Irish College of General Practitioner’s COVID-19 lead and local G.P.;
  5. Kate Durrant, Community Worker;
  6. Anne Twomey, Shandon Area History Group.

  • This year, the Community and Voluntary sector came to the fore more than ever in their response to COVID-19. Under the umbrella of the Cork City Community Response Forum, community and voluntary groups stepped up to aid the most vulnerable when they needed it most.  For that reason, it was decided that rather than single out individual groups for awards, the City would honour all the community groups and volunteers who proved that community spirit burns bright in this city. The Community & Voluntary Recognition Ceremony will air on Thursday 11th June at 3.30 p.m.

  • Finally, this year the Lord Mayor will also be recognising the contribution of two youth advocates, Salma Waleed and Alicia O’ Donovan for their contribution to youth advocacy and representation. The presentation of awards will be available on the City Council YouTube channel from 3.30 on Friday afternoon, June 12th.

The Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. John Sheehan said:  “Cork people have always been known for their strong ties to their community but the unity of purpose that I have seen in our communities over the past three and a half months, demonstrates that even in times of great uncertainty, there is a wonderful tenderness and beauty.”

Each of the ceremonies can be viewed on Cork City Council’s YouTube page here as follows:
