Éanna and the Magic of the Night

Cork City Council’s Night Time Economy Advisor is launching an initiative to help young people (especially children) feel more comfortable in the dark. This project also promotes appreciation for dark spaces, night-time biodiversity, and events that take place after sunset.

Living in a city, there must be a balance of light and dark and there can be magic in the dark spaces if you look for it.

Éanna was created to act as a friendly, approachable symbol for this mission—guiding, educating, and comforting. Éanna’s name comes from the Irish word for bird “éan” and can be given to both boys and girls. Famous Éanna’s include Environmentalist, Éanna Ní Lamhna and Actor, Éanna Hardwicke

Éanna was drawn and brought to life with the help of graphic designer Kieran O’Connor

A story was written to share this magic as well as pictures to colour in and a downloadable resource for teachers or parents and guardians to discuss darkness and why its importance for balance.
