Cork City's Interreg Project makes a valuable contribution
3 April 2020
Increasing awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through community engagement by targeting and motivating communities utilising digital social platforms and financial instruments
The low carbon Interreg Europe Intensify project is now in its 4th semester. The project duration is five years commencing in June 2018 and ending in May 2023. Sadly our Slovakian partner Mesto Trnava has opted to withdraw from the project. We wish them well. A new project partner is now being sought.
Activity during the semester has been hampered by spread of the corona virus outbreak to Europe. Travel restrictions mean that the study visits due to take place in the semester have been deferred.
The project is also building up momentum with each of the project partners enthusiastically beginning the preparation of their regional action plans. These regional action plans will build on the existing climate change and low carbon economy plans the regions have, but will incorporate within them a sharper focus on different effective methods of citizen engagement. The plans will be derived from the interregional learning experiences gained by each partner’s participation in the thematic events of semesters one and two, and the study visits of semester three. The plans will also benefit from each partner’s participation in the deferred second round of study visit and the import workshops scheduled for Semester five.
The Cork Partners and their stakeholder have made a very valuable contribution to the project. The Southern Assembly region has a rich variety of public, private and not for profit organisations eager to engage with communities to increase awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gases. These organisations include the Cork Environmental Forum, Northside Community Enterprises (Energy-Hub program), University College Cork (Green Campus project and Imagining 2050), Union of Students of Ireland (Students Achieving Valuable Energy Savings (SAVES 2) program, Energy Cork (engaging with business to reduce CO2 emissions), Trinity College Dublin (Conseed Program) and the woody wood farm project. There are many other organisations in the southern assembly region that have gone unmentioned here. The Cork Partners would like to thank them all for their contribution.
