Works Extent
Improving and upgrading of existing greenway from Mahon (N40, South Ring Road) towards Passage West.
Objectives
The project will:
- Improve and enhance the safety of the Greenway.
- To increase use of the Passage Railway Greenway, in line with sustainable transport and health/wellbeing policies by improving the travel experience for cyclists and pedestrians.
- To increase the Greenway’s function as an avenue for biodiversity/wildlife and green space as well as protect and enhance the ecological, environmental, architecture and archaeological heritage along the route.
- To improve access and connectivity with the areas around the greenway including the scope for developing the car parking, lighting, security, and public realm facilities at key locations along the route.
- Environmentally sensitive public lighting will be provided along the full extent of the greenway plus CCTV.
- Soft landscaping works will be undertaken including tree, shrub and wildflower planting with native pollinator friendly species.
- Bee, bird and bat boxes will be installed to improve the attractiveness of the greenway for native fauna.
Planning Process Commenced January 2023. Cork City Council has made an application to An Bord Pleanála under section 177AE of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended.
Submissions or observations were to be made in writing to An Bord Pleanála during the period 26th January to 10th March 2023 in relation the proposed development.

Timeline
Statutory Planning Approval granted in Feb 2024.
Detailed Design ongoing through Q3 2024.
Construction to commence in 2025 subject to funding approval.
