Culture Night 2019
The English Market Tantalises the Senses with the Traditions of Flavour and Music on Culture Night
A visit to the The English Market, Ireland’s oldest indoor food market, was certainly an experience to remember on Culture Night as the senses of thousands of visitors were tantalised by the traditions of flavour and music.
The celebrations at the city centre cultural landmark began at 6.30pm as crowds mingled along the market’s atmospheric aisles to the sounds of live traditional music and jazz bands. A Musical line up that kept everyone entertained all night from New style Instrumental Trad Band #Torcán to The Gary Baus Swing Jazz Trio & even more wonderful Trad players throughout.
Of course, as food is the hallmark of The English Market, traders came together to treat visitors to the sublime tastes of their delicious local produce and traditional Cork foods throughout the entire evening.
Speaking on the night, Manager of The English Market Órla Lannin said “Culture Night is a significant event that we look forward to every year. The feeling in The English Market is always electric as both visitors and traders enjoy engaging in this special atmosphere. The love of tradition, the distinctive character and the enormous positivity synonymous with Cork is absorbed all at once in The English Market on Culture Night. We are delighted to welcome visitors of all ages who greatly enjoyed the food, the music and the festivities. Culture Night in Cork goes from strength to strength every year. The huge crowd we saw in The English Market tonight is a testament to the event’s ever-growing popularity on Leeside.”
Trading since 1788 the renowned food market plays an important part of food culture in Cork, with an emphasis on fresh, local and traditional while providing an array of international produce.
Órla Lannin emphasised the importance of Culture Night to The English Market and to Cork as a community, she said “Culture Night provides an opportunity to showcase The English Market in a unique way and it brings the people of Cork together to enjoy a programme of events which always captures the imagination.”
