Cork Sports Partnership is encouraging everyone to get out and get moving during Cork Walking Week 2020.

Cork Walking Week will take place from June 21st to 28th and promises to be a focal point for all walking activity across Cork. The theme of this year’s walking week is ‘Cork Walks Together’ which aims to unite people through sharing their walking activity and showcasing their local area. Cork Sports Partnership is asking members of the public to join them in celebrating walking. People can do this by sharing their photos, videos, walking routes, local information (attractions, or history) on walking in their area on social media, email, or post, (please see details below) all under the hashtag #CorkWalksTogether.

Although travel restrictions have begun to ease, increasing numbers of people are taking advantage of the good weather, lacing up their walking shoes and hitting the pavement.  Cork Walking Week is a celebration of this. The format for this year will be different as much of the content will be delivered online.

Commenting on the launch of Cork Walking Week 2020, Barry O’Connell, Walking Development Officer with Cork Sports Partnership said, “It is great to see the amount of people who have turned to walking as a way of keeping active and well during this time. People of all ages and abilities are exploring their towns, villages and communities on foot and gaining huge appreciation in return. We would love to share and celebrate this as part of Cork Walking Week 2020”.

Denis Barrett, Cork City Community Response Forum Co-ordinator said: “Cork City Council is proud to support this great initiative from Cork Sports Partnership, who continue to play a major role in the Cork City Community Call, the community response to COVID-19.   Phase 1 of the Community Call was focused on meeting the immediate needs of the most vulnerable groups in our society, and now in Phase 2 we are focused on the wide range of initiatives addressing physical and mental wellbeing issues within our communities.  Cork Walking Week can be enjoyed by all ages and fitness levels and will have enormous benefits for both physical and mental health.”

As well as people sharing their walking experiences the week will include challenges such as the Move More walking challenge, photography competitions, training on beginner/refresher navigation, practical lessons for returning to the outdoors, and question & answer session. There will also be workshops to get more out of your walking, plus a guided stepping workout for older adults.
