New stalls open at The English Market, Cork
Just in time for the Christmas season, The English Market, Cork is delighted to announce even more enticing reasons to visit this much loved food shopping destination, with the opening of three exciting new independent stalls at the market.
Roughty’s Little Sister
The first of the three new stalls to open is Roughty’s Little Sister, an expansion of The Roughty Foodie, first established in the 1960’s and now run by third generation family business owner, Margo Ann Murphy.
Roughty’s Little Sister is located adjacent to the original stall, in the former location of the ‘Best Meats’ butchers outlet near the Grande Parade entrance. Both Roughty stalls are a ‘Mecca’ for quality Irish food, crafts and gifts, including a selection of local cheeses, chutneys and preserves, figs and chestnuts, chocolates, cookbooks, candles, and Margo’s signature ‘Pure Cork Hampers’.
The stall has been designed with a traditional sentiment and a commitment to sustainability at the core, with all furnishings redesigned and upcycled. The new stall also includes a market-first florist section, featuring a selection of fresh and chemical-free wildflowers that are prepared the traditional way - wrapped in brown paper and tied with string in front of you, while you wait.
On the new stall opening Margo Ann Murphy stated, “I am so proud to open our second stall, Roughty’s Little Sister. I noticed a surge of customers looking for local products over the past 20 months and have seen so many new faces coming through the doors of The English Market to shop, which was really reassuring, so I decided to be brave and go for it! I am so thankful to the people of Cork for really getting behind their local businesses and long may it continue!
Margo also recently launched her first e-commerce website with the support of her Local Enterprise Office, where hampers are now available to be delivered nationwide, see www.theroughtyfoodie.com
Charlie Mahon Ceramics Pottery
Fulfilling a lifelong dream, local pottery artist Charlie Mahon is proud to open his first ever retail outlet at The English Market, Cork.
Charlie Mahon Ceramics has been trading since 2016, when his signature mackerel design launched his brand to the market. Since then, Charlie Mahon Ceramics has received popular acclaim as the ‘go to’ Cork gift brand, that up to now, has been stocked only through a number of leading wholesale suppliers and online.
Charlie's signature style introduces art to ceramic pottery. His beautiful mugs, platters and bowls are handmade and hand painted, finished with a luxurious glaze, fired in the kiln not once but twice. The glazes are vibrant and bright yet elegant and timeless - the artwork is international in style but has a ‘Pure Cork’ feel. The art on the pottery is both whimsical, witty, and humorous.
At the opening of the stall, Charlie Mahon stated, “What do you serve good food on? Plates, platters and bowls….. and good bowls at that! With that in mind we think the English Market is the ideal location for our first shop as the home of craft, food and Cork humour… a perfect fit!
People who shop in the English Market seem to be like minded, into their food, into exploring new ideas, creating nice homes for themselves, buying local products, creating new recipes, and enjoying the good things in life, they enjoy quality not quantity. For our customers, made in Cork is important, as is supporting Irish and local business. In addition to this new shop in the English Market we are also stocked in key gift and homeware retailers nationwide, but this shop is special - you get to meet The maker, The Artist - or indeed ‘The Makers Wife’ on our home turf!!”

‘Comfort and Joy’ by Jenny Rose Clarke and Sheila Fitzpatrick
From the start of December, visitors to the market will be treated to an exciting new feelgood festive pop-up stall, ‘Comfort and Joy’, just inside the left-hand door of the Grand Parade entrance.
Sheila Fitzpatrick, owner of the Alternative Bread Company and Jenny Rose Clarke, owner of The Real Olive Company and Toonsbridge Dairy, have joined forces to bring the former “start-up stall” to life for the season, transforming it into a treasure trove of colourful gifts and delicious festive fare.
All the Olive Stall favourites will be there – choose from hampers presented in a gift box or one of their striking, signature bowls – along with a selection of beautiful ceramics, soaps and woven baskets.
Meanwhile ABC will be presenting Italian pannetoni, award-winning jewelled Christmas cakes, gluten-free puddings and of course the famous ABC mince pies in their distinctive triangular box (a special edition this year, redesigned to reflect the theme of Comfort and Joy) and a host of other traditional favourites.
As always, customers can expect to find everything they need under one roof this festive season at The English Market. To browse the full range of stalls and traders, please visit
